The days are longer, the sun is warmer and all we can think about is the next chance we’ll have to enjoy the outdoors. Summer is finally here. Of course, you can’t spend the entire summer outside, so why not find a way to bring summer style in to get yourself, and your home, into the spirit of the season?
Bring the outdoors in
Having to be inside at some point during the summer months is inevitable, so why not bring the outdoors in? Create a summer table scape with flowers, plants and fresh fruit centrepieces to make your home smell amazing and look beautiful. Find some brightly coloured vases, serving ware and table linens to brighten your home with summer style. For a more rustic feel, materials like bamboo or a jute area rug will make you feel at one with nature, even inside.
Move the indoors out
But let’s be honest, when the weather gets warm, do you really want to be inside? Summer time means you have the chance to make your outdoor space a continuation of your interior. Create an outdoor living room that encourages people to sit, socialize and enjoy the season. Make your outdoor furniture extra cofortable with pillows and cushions made of weather-resistant fabric and get a durable area rug to complete the space. You can even accessorize the area like you would any indoor space — are, mirrors and clocks will make your exterior “room” feel complete. And don’t forget end tables and a coffee table to a place to set down your favourite summer sips!
Freshen up your furniture
Summer is a season that seems to scream for light and airy colours, so if fall and winter had your home swathed in dark and muted hues, it’s time to make a change. The easiest way to do this is to look for some light and bright throw pillows and decorative throws for a quick change and a refreshing burst of colour. But if your furniture is slipcovered, you can make an even more drastic seasonal swap. Lose the dark fabrics on your furniture and opt for white or khaki covers that can be as casual or as formal as you want, all you have to do is accessorize!
Opt for curtains over drapery
One of the best parts of summer is opening the windows and letting the cool night air in. If your windows are covered with drapery material, the heavy and dark fabric won’t let the air move. Consider curtains paired with sheers for flexibility in the summer months. This way you can maintain privacy when you need it, but also savour the summer views and fresh air.
Kick up the curb appeal
Winter wasn’t just tough on you, it was tough on your home and nothing shows off winter wear like the summer season. The quick fix to curb appeal starts with your yard and garden. It won’t take long for some pretty instant gratification after some touch manual labour. But after that, we bet your house is still missing something and we know what it is. A paint job. Nothing brightens a home for the summer months like a fresh coat of exterior paint and summer is the perfect time to try out a new hue. Find the perfect colour for your shutters, front door and garage and watch your home look like new again in the summer sun!
After the cold winter we had here in Niagara, we’ve all been itching to crack open the windows and invite the warm weather in.
